The egg retrieval process may sound onerous (especially if you compare it to, let’s say, sperm collection…), but we’re here to tell you it’s really not that bad!
Here’s how it works:
Step 1
Fertility
Assessment
You will undergo a quick blood test of your anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) and transvaginal ultrasound to allow our doctors to assess your fertility.
Some other general health blood tests will be performed as well (FBC, coagulation, etc.).
Step 2
Medical
Consultation
You will meet with one of our doctors to discuss the results of your fertility assessment and other aspects of your medical history, and to talk more in-depth about the process and the expected outcomes of egg freezing for you personally.
The doctor will also teach you how to tackle thelogistics of a successful freezing cycle, such as how to administer the prescribed hormone injections.
Step 4
Retrieval
Day
You will undergo a 15-minute surgical procedure, in which your doctor will retrieve the eggs from your ovaries. You will be mildly sedated to prevent pain, and the process will be done by needle (no incisions or stitches).
You will most likely be able to resume normal activity the next day.
Step 3
Ovary
Stimulation
Over 10 to 14 days, you will self-administer daily hormone injections, which will help stimulate your ovaries to prepare them for egg retrieval.
(Note: you can also ask your partner, friend, parent, etc. for help!)
We will check in with you at least every other day throughout this process, as you may experience some side effects similar to PMS during this time..
Step 5
Vitrification
Our partner clinic will incubate your retrieved eggs to maximize their chances of maturity; maturation is required in order for eggs to be successfully fertilized.
Mature eggs are frozen in liquid nitrogen, a “flash freezing” technique that prevents ice crystals from forming inside the cell, allowing for an approximate 90% survival rate. Your eggs are then transferred to
a secure storage facility
